Big Data Privacy Concerns on the Farm

With UAVs coming to American farm fields, probably after September 2015, the American Farm Bureau has a good four part short video series on the pressing issues related to the data collected on the farm.  It goes beyond privacy to data security, data Freedom Of Information requests, commodity market manipulation, target marketing and other concerns.

I have presented a few possible uses already, and future agreements should not be one-sided to the UAV/GIS/Geomatics provider.  To be accepted balanced, transparent agreements need to be the norm.  GIS/Geomatics data is just one part of the “Big Data” mentioned and many American farmers are small to medium businesses (fewer than past years, there are some large corporate farms out there) and they will want fairness to protect their livelihood for their generation and future generations to hand the family farm down to.

Now is the time to talk with legal departments and craft fair deals to put to use after September 2015 across American farm fields on data collection and use.
