UAVs in the Technology Life Cycle

Across multiple disciplines, UAVs are still early in their technology life cycle, even though model airplanes have been around for 30yrs+, fitting sensors on UAVs is a recent development with shrinking sensors and better quality sensors.

The Economist Magazine had a good story on the technology life cycle.  UAVs are still in the early stages of the cycle, it is farther along outside the United States than inside the United States due to the FAA rules against flying them before September 2015.  In other parts of the world, it is closer to the peak.  The next 5-10 years will move the technology into more realistic roles as the uses become more commonplace and easy to use for everyone.  Now is the time to experiment, explore, budget, build workflows, rebuild workflows, etc…  As new sensors, aerospace platforms, and post-processing software come around, the market will onlymature.
