NPR Discussion on Smart Cities

NPR’s All Tech Considered blog has a good post on the sociological aspects of Smart Cities.  Smart Cities are cities that take advantage of modern technologies to help run their cities more efficiently.  It refers to a upcoming book on October 7, 2013 by Anthony M. Towsend called Smart Cities.  The blog summary refers to the private sector coming in, putting in new technologies and staying involved in the future, which is interpreted as taking some control away from city governments.

This will be a good book when it comes out this fall.  City governments (and other related agencies in that geographical area) and the private sector should use this to develop and move forward policies about control of the data in their public/private contracts.  The “Big Data” is part of GIS/Geomatics plans for the future of cities.  I would preorder this book and give it a detailed read this fall.
