Costs of Cloud Computing May Not Hold Processing Savings

When planning large scale computing projects (on this blog are meteorology, LiDAR, GIS, Ansys 3D modeling, etc…) the choice you will be presented with is do you host your own servers or outsource them to a cloud solution (someone else’s datacenter/servers).  At first glance cloud computing rates look pretty cheap, but they are only cost effective on a short term-demand basis.  Any long term use becomes more expensive than hosting your own processing center.
